will blog for fashion

it has literally taken me 3 days to get this post live.  pink eye has infected my household, making my already needy children overly clingy and minimizing my ability to use 2 hands or even one to do anything other than hold them.  but I do love the cuddles!!  I'm gonna do my best to keep it short on the chit chat and stick to the fashion, since that's the real reason you're stopping by, right?  so, 2 weeks ago was SBScon and lucky for me, it took place in Charleston, which meant I didn't have to travel.  for those of you unfamiliar, this is a conference for bloggers.  we come, we socialize, we learn and I cant speak for everyone else, but I went home feeling pretty pumped to blog, blog and blog some more.  of course, for me, it was all about getting dressed up and out of the house!!  so, starting with look numero uno, ie my first impression, I wanted to make a statement.  I think I always want to make a statement, but especially when meeting new people, which was the case, because I wore this tuxedo number to our Friday night cocktail meet and greet hosted by swoozies.  starting with the white romper, I love the lace detail, but in true form, I couldn't leave it at that, so I layered over my tuxedo blazer and buttoned it up exposing the pretty scalloped hem of the shorts.  staying on the black and white train, I laced up my black sandals and my latest pair of sunglasses from my endless eyewear collection.  lastly I slung on this cross-body for a bold pop of pink and if it looks a little different than the ones I've worn before, its because its LIZARD!!  for me, this is amazing, because im a little bit of a clutz and, uh, hello!  I have 3 sticky children, so the lizard is much more spill friendly than the classic python.
skipping over to sunday brunch with Hallmark, I wore this utility shirt dress that I immediately fell in love with as soon as I walked in to Finicky Filly.  yes, im a sucker for olive, and i'm gonna go ahead and forecast my fall wardrobe being much more this minimal vibe.  im really digging it.  of course, nothing for me is too minimal.  I had to add something, so I stuck with my staple of the moment; the tied on denim jacket.  I was originally thinking black heels, but having sent back my zac posen sunnies from Friday night, I wanted to break in my new pair and they just so happened to be tortoise, so I switched it up for nude lace ups.  these guys are super old, but I've linked a few similar pairs below because you can never have too many nude heels!
jumping back to Saturday, this was our longest day, and the most inspiring.  we had the amazing opportunity to learn from some big time influencers and then meet with amazing brands to discuss potential collaborations.  just you wait guys, good things are coming to NLSB!!  so, of course, I wanted something fun and comfortable at the same time.  enter in the culotte!!  at first mention of the comeback of the culottes, I was thinking, no, no, no, please NO!!!  but these are not your mothers culottes and everytime i wear this white pair, all I think is, how was I so wrong?  a heal is a must for these baggy britches, but they are oh so perfect for everything!  i paired them with this super cool ribbon tank and turban (thanks Arkeedah!) and finished it off with this python tote which I basically shoved my life in for the day.  Thank you Southern Blog Society for having me!!  I am so excited for where this year is headed and I now feel more equipped than ever!!  and thank you guys for sticking with me as I figure this thing out.  i may know style, but technology and i are yet to be friends.

mom bod

sometimes I like to work out, ok so not really, but sometimes. well more like never, but like I said, sometimes.  I used to be borderline obsessive about working out and ran like 6 miles a day plus hit up the gym 5+ times a week.  it was a tad over excessive.  I would love to say I got burnt out, but truthfully, i just got lazy.  the thought of going to the gym bores me and with this heat, running is totally out of the question.  so, nowadays, i'm rockin what i like to call, the "mom bod".  its basically skinny fat.  genetics blessed me with a thin frame, but my sedentary life style has me lookin all too saggy, so i finally gave in and decided it was time to kick my butt in gear, and i've pretty much hated every minute of it thus far.  step 1 to fitness motivation: cute new clothes!!  priorities, right??  thanks to Marika, i scored some cute new duds, including these pants that sport a tummy control waist band which is definitely something i need after carrying 3 children.  plus, i mean, who doesn't love a printed pant?  anything is better than the boring black everyone and their mother is selling, give me color!!  step 2.  find a workout plan that works for you:  this is the hardest task for me.  like i said, nothing about working out gets me excited, so i did some research to find the best bang for my buck without ever having to step foot in a gym.  enter in Kayla Itsines!  i started and then restarted her plan after vacation pushed me off the wagon.  so, i just restarted week 1 after barely making it to week 3, but i am honestly loving the results, which is the only motivation keeping me on board.  step 3.  stay hydrated!!  fitness freak or not, water is important!  and aside from the gallons of coffee i drink, water is my beverage of choice.  fortunately for me, Swell can be used for both!  and the bottle just so happens to match my sneakers, which aren't actually mine, bc i stole them from my gf and then she stole them back, bummer right?  nbd, im totally stealing her style and ordering a pair of my own because this color combo is perfection.  so whether you're a fitness freak, or a wannabe like me, looking cute is the ultimate goal, am i right??  good luck lovies!!

belk mens fall style statements
ok gals, and guys!!  I know i said I was going to make you wait, but September is so far away, so I thought I would give you a peek behind the scenes and show you a few of my favorite looks that I styled for Belk's Fall Lookbook.  my specific task was styling the must haves for men or as Belk tags them "most wanted ".  men's fashion is hardly groundbreaking but the slightest detail can change the whole look and incorporating layers (my fave) can elevate any guy to that of a fashionisto.  I grew up with a pretty stylish papa and at a young age he started taking me to the tailor to help him pick out his suits.  he always wore suits.  like every single day.  he only owned 1 pair of jeans and i'm pretty sure he bought them in the 70's.  he has definitely passed off his sense of dressing to my brothers and all 3 of them have their own uniquely classic style so every time I dress a man, i have 1 of them in mind.  starting with my pops, like I said, he's a suit kinda guy, and even his relaxed looks tend to incorporate a sport coat, so I took note from him in styling my first most wanted item, the corduroy pant.  pretty much all men's styles are classic for the simple fact that they've been duplicated for decades, but the corduroy truly is a fall staple for any man's wardrobe and its a fresher approach to the traditional chino.  getting dad's stamp of approval I layered on this khaki sport coat and mixed plaids with a smaller print on the shirt and wider for the tie.  the accessories are what really give this look intrigue.  funky socks add a sense of adventure (and I guess i'm on a kick, because I've added a pair to almost every outfit) and the wingtip meets mukluk boots give it a rugged vibe.
my older brother, Sean has a very business meets boy band kinda style so I kept him in mind when styling my next 2 most wanted items, the shawl collar and the puffer vest.  starting with the sweater, this lightweight version is easy to layer and the sand tone is perfectly versatile.  I paired it with clean dark denim and instead of sticking with the classic color family, I added some pops neon with this plaid button up, sports watch and another pair of funky socks.  sleek black loafers give it a classic feel and I love that you can switch out the laces.
this year the puffer is a bit deflated making it seem more versatile and preppy, so I paired it over some denim on denim aka the Canadian tuxedo and accessorized with leather lace ups, a plaid tie and tortoise spectacles.
my next 2 looks were with my younger brother Bret in mind.  he is the most adventurous with his fashion and like me, loves to layer.  he has this rugged meets school teacher meets tailored to perfection kinda thing goin on and it just works!  my next item was the plaid sport coat.  this look is my favorite of all the looks and I've dubbed it "mr ripley" aka matt damon, the talented.  remember that scene on the boat?  the blazer and pocket square give him a professor vibe, and the suspenders and sunnies have him all school-boy chic.  I love the plaid on plaid and the casual khakis and I finished off the look with lace up boots and this cross-body satchel because he's definitely the academic type.
the most fun most wanted is all about the sock!  so clearly I've already been incorporating these guys into most of my fall looks, but to really showcase the sock, I went for a classic vibe with the outfit.  a white oxford, straight leg denim and sneaker loafers have him all sharp dressed man and the spectacles add that nerd boy chic look that I love so much.
lastly, and always a crowd pleaser, is my baby brother Kurt.  with model good looks, he doesn't really have to try and has the most casual style of all my brothers.  he's trendy rugged, but not really on purpose, if that makes sense.  so his first look was the jog pant.  I personally love the jog pant, especially when its more pant less jog.  this athleisure look is the perfect Saturday style for trips to the market (do men do that?) or hanging with the boys.  the olive cargo is a cool update on last years joggers so to keep it casual I layered a white tee over this turquoise speckled henley.  a sporty watch and leather trainers keep with the athletic vibe and purple ray-bans finish off the look with a bright pop of color.
my final look is all about the chukka boot.  this look is a close second in my fave department and honestly, I would totally rock the female version of this look in a heartbeat.  this brown boot goes with everything and is the perfect fall staple for the man's wardrobe, so I could really take his outfit anywhere.  I was feeling the fireside vibe this sweater was throwing my way, so I had to snag it and I layered it over Kurt's signature look of a fresh tee and jeans.
i'll leave a few more looks til September, but i'm pretty excited to see the finished product!!  it was a dream come true and even though I showed up wearing the exact same outfit as my Belk boss Steph, i'd say we were totally twinning!!!

special thanks to Belk for this amazing opportunity!!

Good Afternoon Chicas!!!  I hope you all enjoyed the holiday weekend!  we are back from vacay, but the never-ending pile of laundry has me dreaming of mocktails under the palm trees.  it's already noon and I still haven't put on real clothes or unpacked a single thing, so i'd say i'm making progress, no?  I plan on burying myself in work (and I use the term loosely) for the rest of the day and ignoring the explosion of luggage in our kitchen.  so lets discuss this quote unquote work that I speak of.  "blogger" is technically my job title, but creatively I consider myself a stylist.  styling is where my love affair with fashion started and it is the main reason behind my blog.  when I first started in retail, dressing the mannequins was my favorite!  I would give them names, give them personalities, basically create my very own plastic girl group.  nowadays I really only get to style myself and as fun as that is, I miss that human contact.  sorry, I should mention, I styled breathing human beings as well, but the plastic ones were still my favorite ;).  my job as blogger has awarded me some amazing opportunities, some of them have even allowed me to put back on the stylist cap, and 2 weeks ago I got to do just that with my favorite subject, Men's Fashion!!  some of you may remember my Man Candy Monday series??  I really think I need to bring that back.  anyways, 2 weeks ago, Belk put some serious faith in me, and gave me the most amazing opportunity to style their Men's Fall Lookbook.  unfortunately there were no hot models for me to work with, which was probably best for their HR department (I don't know if you know this about me, but im extremely inappropriate and lack the ability to filter what might come out of my mouth.  I'm not currently seeking help, but I acknowledge that I have a problem).  I can't wait to share all the style statements with you guys and show you my looks, but for now you will have to wait and enjoy these women's fashions from Belk that I styled on myself.

this pink dress is a lot of, well, pink!  when I style myself in something so full of color, my first thought is always, how can I break this up?  I love head to toe monochromatic if its separates, but in the case of one item head to toe, whether it be a jumper or a dress, I like to add intrigue to the look by adding layers.  everyone can throw on a dress right?  this is my inner struggle.  I feel like if I just throw on a dress and heels, all that I've shown you is a dress and heels.  not that there's anything wrong with that, its just that I haven't inspired anything for you.  I'm not showing you a look, i'm showing you a dress.  with this dress, the options are endless.  its essentially a big blank pink slate, so you can style it 100 different ways and never wear the same look twice.  jackets are always my favorite layer and I have worn this dress (and just about every other dress that I own) with a denim jacket tied around at my waist.  I don't know why i'm really into that right now.  remember last summer when it was a bit of a debate??  well it was a definite YES for the win, but in an effort to show you a bit of diversity, I wore an actual belt this time, and instead of tying the sleeves around my waist, I put my arms through them.  I love how tough meets pretty with this moto leather and sheer pink.  I added a few delicate accessories and my floral single straps to complete the look.  love you ladies for following along, have a great week!!

pool side
with my summer in full swing, i'm currently obsessing over everything pool friendly.  from sunnies to stereos, I literally want it all!  and since I have a serious shopping addiction, i'm always on the hunt for a deal or a coupon code and I've finally discovered the mother ship; Shop at Home!  basically a sale shoppers dream, SAH offers all the best coupon codes and even offers cash back for everything I was already shopping for.  we unfortunately do not have Nordstrom in Charleston, but it's not as if i'd lug all these rugrats in there if I did, so I resort to online shopping, and at 5% cash back, I feel a little less guilty for the splurge.  and since summer is on my mind, I've picked out my favorite things to pack up for the pool.  starting with the suit, this momma likes a little coverage and a lot of style!  i'm all about a good bikini, but with kids constantly climbing all over me, a 1 piece is pretty much a must.  I love the print on print of this trina turk suit and the neckline shows off just the right amount of skin without all those crazy cutouts (seriously, who looks good in those?)  sunnies are a given, poolside or not, and I love pretty much everything illesteva has been pumping out.  this 2 tone Lucite/tortoise pair are so perfect and need to find their new home on my face ASAP.  the hat is also a great summer staple and the panama style was basically made for lounging.  I especially love the light band on this style and I think it needs to join the sunnies in making a home on my head, or at least the hat wall in my closet so I can stare at it all day  the turkish towel is one of those items that just looks really good on your lounge chair and I honestly don't have a clue if it would even dry me off, but they're just so pretty that I don't think I really care one way or the other.  this flamingo pool float?  im in love!!  but, im also in love with the donut and the slice of pizza float, have you seen those??  i want them all!!!  this retro radio is pretty much the coolest thing I've ever seen.  i wanted to have it in time for our vacay, but i didn't order it in time.  you just pop your phone inside and it plays your songlist while protecting your phone from the water and sun, plus its beyond adorable, which seems to be my only shopping criteria of the moment.  the last 2 items can make or break your pool day.  this eyelet cover-up is perfect for getting you from the lobby to water-side, but it can also take you to lunch, shopping, or wherever else you might wind up.  and the tassel necklace is a great add on to complete your outfit.  and lastly, and most importantly, is the straw tote!!  there's no makin it to the pool without something to carry all your goodies in so why not have an adorable chic tote to make your treck to the pool that much more fashionable?  i have been loving all these Marysol bags popping up on my instafeed.  they're durable, roomy, and bright enough to make any pool day a success!!
